My family isnt perfect. We argue, we fight, we even stop talking to each other at times, but in the end my family is my family. The love will always be there. Me and my family have always had our ups and downs. Even though we all struggle, I’ll always need them in my life. It took a while to realize that. Growing up in my house and neighborhood was hard. My mom has six kids, including me. My mom is a very strong and powerful minded woman. She inspires me so much. She got to where she is know from nothing and still manages to keep a smile on her face. Copywriter QA Carissa Lamkahouan on the Art of the Pitch - The Writers For Hire

COPYWRITER QA: CARISSA LAMKAHOUAN ON THE ART OF THE PITCH Carissa Lamkahouan has two decades of professional writing experience and has been published in a wide range of newspapers, magazines, and online publications. At The Writers For Hire (TWFH), Carissa is our in-house authority for all things journalism. In this installment of our Copywriter QA series, we talked about the process of pitching an article. Carissa’s advice: Start with the pitch letter. If you can perfect the art of the pitch letter, everything else will fall into place. TWFH: Let’s start with the basics: What is a pitch letter and why do you need one? CL: A pitch letter is a letter to a publication’s editor that explains your idea. It should tell the editor why your story idea is important in general, and why their readers in particular will want to read it. I also believe it’s important that you pitch yourself, too. You’re asking them to let you do this story, so explain why you’re the best person for the job. TWFH: What are the key elements of a good pitch letter? CL: It’s a lot like a cover letter. Your first paragraph should say, â€Å"Here’s what I want to write about, and here’s why it’s important.† The second paragraph needs a hook: Explain why readers will want to read your story. And in the third paragraph, sell yourself a little bit. Tell them how long you’ve been writing; link to a few articles or invite them to look you up. TWFH: How much detail about the story do you want to include in your pitch letter? CL: In first paragraph, I get decently specific. Publications get a million pitch letters. You don’t want an editor saying, â€Å"What are you talking about?† Spell it out very clearly: â€Å"This subject is interesting because XX. Your readers would be interested because XX.† In the past, I’ve also included a line to the effect of, â€Å"If this topic doesn’t appeal to you, there are other angles we can pursue, please feel free to contact me.† TWFH: Does it help to let them know that you’re flexible, topic-wise? CL: Yes. There was one case where I was hired to write an article on behalf of a client. He wanted to get his company’s name out there. We were pitching to a niche business publication, and the hook we originally came up with was a funny story about his celebrity client. It was a really fun idea, but when I sent pitch letter I mentioned that we were open to other ideas. And they called me back and said, â€Å"This is funny, but it’s not for us.† So we went with a more serious, business-focused angle.   TWFH: How do you come up with the right hook that will appeal to a particular publication? CL:Sometimes it’s pretty obvious. Luckily, everything’s online so you can take a look at the type of articles they publish. You’ll see a pattern. TWFH: So, your hook and pitch letter should change depending on the content of the publication? Can you pitch one topic multiple ways? CL: Yes. For example, I was going to write an article for a company that focused on creating products for dogs. I wrote pitch letters to several dog-related magazines, but the letters weren’t all the same. For more business- and inventor-focused magazines, I pitched a more general article about how the company founder was an inventor, and how he came up with ideas for new dog products. But I also pitched to pet-related magazines. The company also had a dog daycare business, and for the animal-specific magazines, we made that the focus. Things like, â€Å"What is dog daycare? And why do we need it?† I also pitched to a wellness magazine. TWFH: How did you find a â€Å"wellness† hook? CL: Dog daycare helps with dog depression. It was a completely different angle but still related to the inventor. I focused on wellness aspect of his dog daycare business. Daycare makes dogs happier. They get depressed if they’re home alone. I interviewed veterinarians for that article, and I relied heavily on interviews with a dog psychiatrist. TWFH: Can you walk me through the process from start to finish? Do you start by having an idea, pitching it to publications, and then waiting to write it until you know who’s interested? Do you write the article first and then pitch it? Or does the process vary? CL: It is a fluid process, but it usually starts with idea from experience I have or something I hear. Or maybe I have a client who wants me to help them get their name out there for whatever reason. I like to have at least two to three potential stories I can write based on just that one idea. TWFH: Does the process change at all when you’re ghostwriting or if you’re writing and pitching an article on behalf of a client?   CL: With the dog daycare client I   had one publication that liked the topic I suggested, which was the evolution of dog daycare. But they said, â€Å"We don’t want it to be all about your client.† TWFH: And your client was okay with that? Were you able to find a way to mention his company without making that the focal point? CL: I told him, â€Å"The lead is not going to be about your company – but when we mention X topic, we’ll mention you.† A lot of times, clients will be okay with that. You can also ask your client to supply photos, so when these magazines ask for pictures, which they will, you send your client’s pictures. TWFH: So, the more flexible the client, the better the chances of getting their story picked up? CL: They might get more coverage if they’re willing to take focus off of themselves. It helps to explain tell clients, â€Å"Sometimes the article might be about your company, and then it might not.† My client was able to get more coverage with articles that mentioned his company or included a photo he sent, rather than articles that were all about his company or inventions. TWFH: How do you choose which publications to pitch to? CL: First, look at the subject matter and start with obvious publications. Then start working your angles. Look up publications related to any of those angles you’d be surprised what comes up. TWFH: What about really super-niche publications that have outdated websites and/or don’t have a â€Å"submissions† section or clear info about pitching? Do you just write them off and move on? Do you try to track down contact info? CL: If they’re niche, I try pretty hard to find an inroad. Most articles in a publication will have email address for the writer. Try contacting them. I’ve done that. I’ll say, â€Å"Hi I know you’re not an editor with X publication, but can you hook me up?† TWFH: Does that work? CL: Most writers will be willing to help. You can also try looking them up on social media, like Facebook or LinkedIn. TWFH: How many pitch letters should you send at one time? CL: That depends on how fast you’re trying to turn the article around. If you’re not in a hurry, you can start with five, then send another five in a month. If your topic is something time-sensitive – something that coincides with an anniversary date for an event, for example you might want to send 20 pitch letters. And this is important: If you’re pitching to magazines in particular, you have to pitch six months in advance. They want stories three to four months in advance. So if you have a date-oriented piece, you’d better pitch early. TWFH: What happens if multiple publications say they’re interested in your piece? CL: Do all of them. But there’s the deal: Try to have a different hook or different interviewees on the same topic. You don’t want to write the same article multiple times. If it’s the type of article that doesn’t have a lot of hooks or there are not a lot of ways to write differently about your topic, you can still make it as unique as possible for each publication. It helps to have some ideas up your sleeve ahead of time. For example, find some local sources. If papers in both South Carolina and LA picked you up, find local people to interview. Reach out to local colleges or local experts. Editors know you’re pitching to multiple publications. But don’t ever turn down a publication. It’ll work itself out. Ask if they’d like a different angle. TWFH: Is there a rule to how often to check in or follow up? A lot of writers start to feel like they’re being annoying or too pushy after a while – especially if they’re not getting a response. CL: Don’t be scared to do it. You’re doing those editors a favor. They don’t want to run around and find story ideas. A lot of them don’t have staff writers. They have pages to fill, and a lot of times writers don’t make their deadlines. And when that happens, they lose their stories and they’re scrambling for a replacement. Again, what can they do? Ignore you or say no. TWFH: So you really might be helping them out if, say, they end up short on content. CL: Editors are relying on your submissions. Offer other angles. Be fluid, be flexible, don’t be shy. You should never be shy about pitching. Editors know they’re going to get these pitch letters. They’re expecting to get them. Despite the fact that this changes over time, people defined by a unique culture are often resistant to change. In the past centuries, the Europeans were determined to conquer various territories in relation to trade and culture. They believed that their culture was necessary for civilization and, therefore, dominated China and India among other colonies with their tradition and culture. The encounter Europeans had with China and India in the late 16th century to the end of the 17th century, provoked cultural resistance from the communities (Gluck Embree, 1997). What was termed as modernity by the westerners was deemed by China and India, as the dilution of the basic values that were already inculcated in the communities prior to the arrival of Europeans. To determine the legacy that resulted from the encounter, it is important to explore the historical cultural factors that caused the differences in outcomes. Discussion The aim of Europeans in the encounter was to instill their traditions in the belief system of the Chinese and Indians. Trade was a major factor that linked Spain with China and India. According to Butler (2007), people from China and India exchanged fine silk with American Silver from Spaniards. The Europeans explored Africa in search of trade routes that linked Africa and Asia to establish their power through trade for silver and gold. Unlike Africans, China and India did not give in to the European power (Booth et al, 2000). Nevertheless, Europeans practiced and allowed for syncretism in a bid to get better results from the blended cultures. China and India resisted cultural change because their belief system was already deeply rooted in their own cultural values. Hence, the degree of cultural change caused by the westerners in the countries was minimal (AUK, n.d). Cultural syncretism occurred in the Americas and Africa but not in China and India. People in China and India assumed that they should maintain their culture indefinitely because it had been static for a long time. Their ethnocentrism played a crucial role in the resistance to change with their beliefs embedded in their past traditions and rituals. The religions of these countries differed with that of the westerners, which encouraged capitalism. Their religions were mainly Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism, which showed capitalism to be centered on materialistic attitudes rather than esteemed societal values. The European culture was achievement oriented, valued work, education and religious pluralism. On the other hand, in the Chinese and Indian culture, literacy was only for some people, promoted religious monopoly and people found satisfaction and pleasure away from work. According to Gluck Embree (1997), China viewed trade as a crucial aspect. Most of the Europeans who targeted China and India were Christian missionaries. According to Gluck Embree (1997), individual westerners who were more culturally aggressive were successful in gaining access to Asia through imperialism. The Christian missionaries from Europe faced extreme hostility from the Chinese who were against the western culture. â€Å"Both in India and elsewhere, people of an Islamic tradition would prove singularly resistant to Western cultural influence, whatever their ethnicity. The reasons for this are uncertain, but probably relate to the unique linkage of religious with secular life in the Islamic religion (Gluck Embree, 1997). China was dominated by a cohesive Confucian worldview showed by the elites acquiring extraordinary power and this culture created resistance to cultural change planned by the Europeans. The Confucian worldview in China was prestigious because it allowed for the articulation of ethical, social and political values. Gluck Embree (1997) further explain that the Chinese only accepted the most superficial western values, which would benefit China. The country embraced the education reform later past the 19th century when modern forms of knowledge were introduced among students. In the 16th century, the significance of Europeans in Asia was shown by the influence of Jesuit savants in Peking. The Asian communities did not take the ideas of the Jesuit savants seriously. The Europeans only left an indirect impact on them such as the introduction of American food crops. This led to an influx in population growth, in China’s Manchu (Qing), after Asians incorporated the food crops in their diet. From 1498 to the 1750s, Asia had western empires, which controlled small areas in small-scale units. In India, the fall of the Mughal Empire made the small-scale units of the Eu ropeans significant among the Indians. The differences in the types of European encounters and degrees of cultural change have left legacies in the post-modern times. Countries such as Japan, that embraced the European concepts of civilization, had strong economies and developed technology. In China, the Manchu rulers from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) integrated an activist approach into Confucian school of thought and modernized the state-society relationship (Gluck Embree, 1997). China began encouraging the market economy. â€Å"Fiscal reform during the reign of the Yongzheng emperor (1723-35) helped address the chronic problem of local government revenue shortages in the late imperial period and enhanced the ability of local government to fund road, bridge and ferry projects and assist in land reclamation and flood control (Gluck Embree, 1997).† The traditional bureaucracy was challenged by China’s population growth that resulted from the revamped economy. India maintained social harmony but became atta ched to specific British ideas and political processes so that it could attain freedom. Conclusion Cultural change in a society is gradual and is determined by various factors. India and China resisted the cultural change introduced by Europeans because both communities had established a strong belief system prior to the arrival of the westerners. However, in the 19th and 20th century, both countries adopted some form of European civilization even though it was minimal. Many thought this would only serve to make her appear guilty, but she rep orts hearing individuals in the audience making positive comments about her willingness to stand-up to the congressional committee. Vietnam was another country in Asia that was under pressure to become a Communist country. President Kennedy described the countries falling in Asia as dominoes. If one falls then another will follow. America tried to create a government in the south to withstand Communist pressure from the north. This failed so the United States chose to escalate the war through a campaign of bombing. Ground troops were added but proved largely ineffective. America divided between supporters and protestors of the war in Vietnam. President Nixon finally got the Vietcong to come to the peace table. The war was a defeat for America. With the election of President Reagan in 1980, America took a large turn towards becoming a more conservative nation. President Reagan worked hard to incorporate a new conservative agenda into domestic policy. Government funding of abortions t hrough Medicaid was banned. Many gains for gays and lesbians at the local lever were overturned and the overall size of government was reduced. Taxes were cut because Reagan believed that free enterprise was the best way to grow an economy. Spending on the military was increased in an effort to out-produce the Soviet Union. This resulted in the Soviet Union failing eventually, but also made government deficits. Richard Nixon’s political strategy reflected the racial and radicalism of his era in several ways. He ran on a strong platform of law and order. He wanted to show America that the hippies and their kind were actually the minority of people in America, not the majority. The complete chaos created by rioting minorities in urban areas and the debacle of the Democratic convention in Chicago played into Nixon’s hand. I have worked in India for about 3 years after graduation before coming to Australia for post graduation. Abortion is Morally Wrong Abortion, the termination of pregnancy before the fetus is capable of independent life, can either be spontaneous or induced. It is called "the knowing destruction of the life of an unborn child." (Mass General Laws Chapter 112 Section 12K) When abortion occurs spontaneously, it is called a miscarriage. However, when the loss of a fetus is caused intentionally, it is regarded as a moral issue. Abortion destroys the lives of helpless, innocent children and is illegal in many countries. An estimate of 1.2 million are performed each year. In retrospect, an estimate 38,010,378 innocent children were aborted since 1973 when the process was legalized. Abortion is a simple and safe procedure if it is done by trained medical workers during the first trimester. There are four different techniques utilized during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. Suction aspiration, also known as vacuum curettage, is the most common surgical means of abortion. This is when a powerful suction tube with a sharp cutting edge is inserted into the womb through the dilated cervix. The suction dismembers the body of the developing baby, tearing the placenta from the wall of the uterus, and sucking blood, amniotic fluids, placental tissue, and fetal parts into a bottle. Although it is one of the safer methods, there are still frequent complications such as infection and tearing of the uterus, causing hemorrhaging. Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) is another surgical process involving the insertion of a loop shaped steel knife to cut the baby’s body into pieces. The placenta is then scraped off the uterine wall. There is a higher risk of infection with D&C and greater blood loss than with Suction aspiration. RU 486 and Methotrexate are two similar types of chemical abortion. RU 486 is a pill that can be taken orally only during the five to nine week period. Three trips must be made to the abortion clinic. In the first, the RU 486 pill is administered after a physical examination. During the 2nd, 36 - 48 hours later, the woman is given a dose of artificial prostaglandins initiating uterine contractions. This causes the embryonic baby to be expelled from the uterus. The third visit, about two weeks later, can determine whether the abortion has been completed or if further surgery is necessary. Methotrexate is administered by intramuscular injection. Introduction Most go through their day to day actions giving no thought to all of the people that are behind the scenes making everything that they do go smoothly. From making important business calls on your cell phone while traveling, to getting your lunch in a timely fashion so that you can get back to work. Without human capital none of this would be possible, these businesses are nothing more than a bunch of empty building once the human capital is removed from them. IT is the job of the Human Resource Management (HRM) to make sure that there are qualified people filling all of these positions to make business flow as smoothly as possible every day and to make your experience the best that it can be. The following paper will address what Human Resource management is as well as what the primary function of this department is. Lastly it will address the role that HRM plays in an organizations strategic plan. What is Human Resource Management? Human Resource Management is a function of a group of a group of people or a department that has the primary tasks of recruiting, training, and compensating employees, as well as ensuring that all rules and regulations are followed and that all of the tasks being completed are in line with the organizational goals. This is accomplished through the six core functions of HR which are; Workforce Management, Total Rewards, Risk Management, HR Development, Employee Relations, and Strategic Management (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2013). The workforce management function of HRM is primarily concerned with workforce planning and employment strategies. This includes determining what skills are necessary to complete the jobs, recruiting and  selecting the best possible people to fill the position, and maintaining the records of each employee as well as those that have been terminated. The total rewards function of HRM is the function that deals with all aspects of employee compensation, from salaries to benefit packages and everything in between. Receiving ones paycheck, a raise, bonus, or enrolling in medical or dental coverage that you are eligible for are all things that are taken care of through the total rewards function of HRM. The primary job of those who work in the risk management function of HR is to identify any labor related risks to the employees and the organization, and then to assess, manage and monitor these risks. This is not only limited to safety issues but also includes improper or inadequate training and failure to comply with legal regulations regarding labor laws. The employee relations function of HR deals with just that, Employee relations. It is their job to try and build and maintain positive relationships between the employers, mangers and employees. They are also the ones that will be contacted when there is a dispute that needs resolved or workplace policies or procedures need to be implemented or changed. Lastly the strategic management function of HR is a combination of all of the other core functions as they have been listed above. The strategic management function is primarily concerned with ensuring that all other aspects of HRM interact effectively throughout the organization and all contribute to the goals or support of others in reaching the goals of the organization. What is the primary function of HRM? The primary function of HRM can become quite foggy at times. You see the primary of function of HRM will vary depending upon which area of HR you are immediately dealing with. However, since it is impossible for a business to operate without human capital then clearly the primary function of HRM is to manage the human capital within an organization and provide a clear link between the goals of the organization and all whom work there (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2013). Mind you the HRM team is not the ones that are making the decisions; they are merely making suggestions and bringing insight to those that do make the decisions for the organization that they work for. When the HR is performing well then it should be easy for the employees to see the link between what it is that they do and how it contributes to the  achievement of the organizations goals. What is the role of HRM in an organization’s strategic plan? The role of HRM in an organizations strategic plan is actually quite complex. HRM’s role is to work with the decision makers in the organization and evaluate and develop and organizational strategy. This is in part accomplished through identifying, analyzing, and balancing of external opportunities and threats with the internal strengths and weaknesses. By identifying external opportunities and threats they are then able to work closely with the decision makes to develop a clarified business strategy after which they will realign the HR functions and the key people practices so that they work best with the organizational strategy. They will then create and needed competencies and behaviors to get everyone on the same page and realizing the strategy of the business and the results that are to be expected. Lastly they will re-evaluate the strategy and refine it where necessary to help the business stay aligned an on track to accomplish the goals that it has set out to accomplish. Conclusion Businesses would be nothing other than hollowed out building without the people that are involved in running them daily. Without the human aspect of a business then a business would not be. It is for this reason and this reason alone that makes the HR department or team of any business to be that of a highly valued one, because without the proper people in the proper places, with the proper vision and goals, any organization is going to fail.
